Whether you love them or hate them, it&#8217;s impossible to deny the impact they&#8217;ve had on the hobby.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been involved in 3D printing since the early days of hobby-level machines and have owned several printers over the years. Out of all of them, I can confidently say that I absolutely love my Bambu Labs X1 Carbon (X1C).<\/p>\n<h6><strong>From Hobby Project to Household Appliance<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Before <a href=\"https:\/\/bambulab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bambu Labs<\/a> came along, successful 3D printing often required months of tinkering, endless YouTube videos, and at least one existential crisis caused by a failed print at 98%.<\/p>\n<p>Bambu Labs changed that.<\/p>\n<p>They transformed what was once a time-consuming and frustrating process into a true plug-and-play experience. Click print, walk away, and actually expect the print to succeed. What a concept.<\/p>\n<p>The Bambu Labs A1 is still, in my opinion, one of the best entry-level printers available today.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Giving Credit Where It&#8217;s Due<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>I also own several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.creality.com\/all-products#flagship-series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Creality printers<\/a>, and they deserve recognition for helping make 3D printing affordable and accessible. When the Ender series arrived, it was a huge leap forward. For a few hundred dollars, almost anyone could buy a printer and get a Benchy printed without needing an engineering degree.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, it still required some tweaking, leveling, calibrating, praying, and occasional emotional support\u2014but compared to alternatives like <a href=\"https:\/\/reprap.org\/wiki\/RepRap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RepRap<\/a> kits and early <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prusa3d.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prusa<\/a> machines, it was a major improvement.<\/p>\n<p>Creality&#8217;s open-source philosophy appealed to many makers because it allowed users to choose their own slicers, CAD software, and filament brands. If you enjoy learning, experimenting, and solving problems, it&#8217;s still a fantastic ecosystem.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>The &#8220;Apple&#8221; of 3D Printing?<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Bambu Labs took a very different approach.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of embracing complete openness, they built a more controlled ecosystem around their printers. As someone who generally prefers open-source solutions, I was skeptical at first. The idea sounded a little too &#8220;Apple-like&#8221; for my tastes.<\/p>\n<p>Then I actually used one.<\/p>\n<p>After spending time with the system, I found that the benefits far outweighed the limitations. Bambu has managed to keep things just open enough to avoid most of the frustrations while still delivering the convenience of a tightly integrated ecosystem.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>MakerWorld: Surprisingly Good<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>The Bambu ecosystem starts with <a href=\"https:\/\/makerworld.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MakerWorld<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I used to rely heavily on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thingiverse<\/a> for models, but these days I rarely have trouble finding what I need on MakerWorld. The library has grown tremendously in both quantity and quality.<\/p>\n<p>What really stands out is how seamlessly everything works together. Importing and exporting models from different sources is straightforward, and Bambu consistently updates the software with improvements and new features.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Why I Love 3MF Files<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>One of the most underrated parts of the Bambu ecosystem is its use of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gerzetich.com\/?page_id=629\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3MF<\/a> file format.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike traditional STL files, 3MF files can store print settings along with the model itself. This means that when an experienced designer uploads a model, they&#8217;re also sharing all the slicer settings they used to make it print successfully.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, someone else already did the hard work for you.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of spending hours tweaking temperatures, supports, and print settings, you simply open the file and print.<\/p>\n<p>For someone who remembers manually adjusting Cura profiles for every print, this feels like cheating\u2014and I mean that in the best possible way.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Bambu Handy App<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/bambulab.com\/en-us\/download\/app\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bambu Handy<\/a> mobile app is another feature I use constantly.<\/p>\n<p>I can monitor prints in real time, receive notifications, and even start new print jobs remotely.<\/p>\n<p>If I find a model on MakerWorld and already have the correct filament loaded in the AMS, I can start a print from virtually anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Future me is always surprised when I come home and discover past me started a print from the grocery store.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Hardware That Just Works<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Bambu&#8217;s hardware is excellent right out of the box.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike many older printers, there&#8217;s very little need to upgrade anything. The printers include numerous sensors and automated systems that help detect problems, track maintenance, and guide users through repairs when necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Is it perfect?<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve disassembled my AMS more times than I&#8217;d like to admit because tiny filament fragments somehow possess the survival instincts of cockroaches.<\/p>\n<p>Still, compared to most printers I&#8217;ve owned, the built-in maintenance tools and support features set a new standard for user-friendliness.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>The AMS: The Crown Jewel<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>If there&#8217;s one feature that truly defines Bambu Labs, it&#8217;s the AMS.<\/p>\n<p>Before the AMS, multicolor printing usually meant pausing prints for manual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.selfcad.com\/blog\/how-to-change-filament-mid-print-a-complete-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filament swaps<\/a>, running <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raise3d.com\/academy\/how-to-3d-print-with-dual-extruders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dual extruders<\/a>, or investing in third-party systems like the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.mosaicmfg.com\/c\/Palette_2_%28Pro%29_%28S%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mosaic Palette 2 Pro<\/a>\u2014which I still own.<\/p>\n<p>The AMS simplified everything.<\/p>\n<p>Loading multiple colors and materials became almost effortless. What once felt like a science project now feels like a standard printer feature.<\/p>\n<p>Even better, the AMS works with a wide variety of filament brands. While Bambu&#8217;s own filaments offer the most integration, you&#8217;re not locked into their ecosystem as long as the spool fits and feeds correctly.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Speed Matters<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>The X1C is also incredibly fast.<\/p>\n<p>With print speeds up to 500 mm\/s, projects that once took hours on my Ender can often be completed in a fraction of the time.<\/p>\n<p>My <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flashforge.com\/products\/adventurer-5m-pro-3d-printer?srsltid=AfmBOopE1IjvgNycmz3W7qn2kZ-bsKWz8cb1WRSl6JOQ9E7i3AhUQaCZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flashforge Adventurer 5 Pro<\/a> is arguably faster in some situations, so I often run both machines simultaneously. The Flashforge handles straightforward single-color jobs while the X1C tackles the multicolor projects.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s basically a tiny plastic manufacturing department operating out of my house.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Final Thoughts<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Bambu Labs didn&#8217;t just build a better printer\u2014they changed what users expect from 3D printing.<\/p>\n<p>They took a hobby that often felt like maintaining a small industrial machine and turned it into something much closer to a consumer appliance.<\/p>\n<p>No printer is perfect, and Bambu certainly has its critics.
